The New Yorker talks Nintendo

James Surowiecki, the highly respected financial writer for The New Yorker, focused his attention this week on Nintendo in an article titled, 'In Praise of Third Place'. In it, Surowiecki notes that Nintendo has shattered the conventional wisdom that a company must be number one or number two in its market in order to survive:

Nintendo, though, has not just survived out of the spotlight; it has thrived. It has five billion dollars in the bank from years of solid profits, and this past year, though it spent heavily on the launch of the Wii, it made close to a billion dollars in profit and saw its stock price rise by sixty-five per cent. Sony’s game division, by contrast, barely eked out a profit and Microsoft’s reportedly lost money. Who knew bringing up the rear could be so lucrative?

For those of you who are neither British, nor in the know (don't worry, I was neither of these things ten minutes ago), today is Red Nose Day, a day designated by Comic Relief as one where they provide the entertainment, while we provide the donations to their poverty-busting charity.

While I'm bummed at this moment that we don't get BBC One, as that is where most of the entertainment is being provided (and it's a fantastic line-up), I am pleased that I can help out in my own way by donating via the Traveller's Tales Games website. In return for my donation of ANY amount, I will receive a cheat code for LEGO Star Wars II which will place a funny red nose on each of the game's characters.

Because we so applaud the efforts of Comic Relief here at Lunabean.com, we will add to your funny red nose our downloadable LEGO Star War II Walkthrough and Strategy Guide for free.

In order to claim your guide, please forward your donation receipt to us at info @ lunabean.com with the subject line "Red Nose Day". Please omit any personal details found within the receipt before sending it our way. A Wii Workout: When Video Games Hurt

Nintendo sure is getting some fancy press. First it was the focus of the week by The New Yorker's financial writer, now the Wall Street Journal is lending some ink the Mario factory's way. However, while The New Yorker focused on the business side of Nintendo, the WSJ opted to focus on whimsical side, with reports of Wii injuries nationwide. Apparently the swinging motion required with many of the Wii Sports titles has caused a few shoulder and elbow pains, along with a number of broken lamps. It's a cute article. Read it here.

NBC's Russert suggests video games involved in VT shooting

Nearly a week after the Virginia Tech shooting, and with no credible evidence to support it, Tim Russert of NBC'sMeet the Presstwice suggested that violent video games had something to do with the tragedy.

Take a lookat today'sMeet the Pressand fast forward to the 19:35 mark.

Russert asks the Sec. of Education,Margaret Spellingsthis leading question: "Has any studies been done about video games, there are reports that Mr. Cho spent inordinate amounts of time looking at violent video games."

Spellings answers that there are many such studies and that "we do have evidence that children…exposed to violent television and video games, that that certainly does net out in more violent behavior."

Russert, who can't seem to drop the topic, then goes on to ask Sec. of Health and Human Services,Mike Leavitt, "Any thought of looking into video games and the impact they may have on young children?"

Leavitt gives a very generic answer essentially saying that "we have to look at a lot of things".

Let's debunk and rant, shall we…

Wii browser grows up

I first experienced the wonderful pulsating glow of the Wii a day after we set it up. Coming downstairs to a dark house, the living room was emanating an eerie, yet beautiful, blue light. What does this mean? I wondered to myself. Are the cats responsible for this?

Allison and I soon figured out that no nefarious feline activity had taken place and that it simply means you have a message, either from a friend or from Nintendo, whom I consider a friend.

This morning, that blue light caused me to flutter to the Wii like a moth to the flame. I was rewarded with a message saying that the Wii's Opera browser is now out of beta and is a full fledged adult!

Some of the new features include the ability to hide the toolbar, click-and-drag scrolling, and an option to choose your favorite search engine. All in all, it's a pretty rad TV web browser.

The browser is free through through June 30th after which time it'll cost $5. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Gamecube'Zelda: Twilight Princess'in stores today — Wii walkthrough will work

Today is a huge day for Gamecube gamers in the US, as today is the day when Gamecube version of 'The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess' begins trickling onto store shelves. Booya!

I say 'trickling' because a) the game just shipped yesterday, so some stores won't receive their copies until later this week, and b) there is a rumored (although unconfirmed) shortage of 'Zelda: TP'.

You may be wondering whether our 'Zelda: Twilight Princess' Walkthrough and Strategy Guide for the Wii will work for the Gamecube version. The answer, is yes, but with some stipulations.

First, in the 'Zelda: Twilight Princess' walkthrough we do give controls specific to the Wii. However, this is only done because the Wii controls are so new, and Gamecube gamers should have no problem following the game's controller instructions ('Zelda' games have never been known to have difficult controls).

Second, the Wii version of the game is actually a mirrored version of the Gamecube game. Nintendo did this so Link, who is normally a lefty, would have his sword in his right hand for Wii gamers, making for a more natural Wii controller movement. This mirroring means, when using our 'Zelda: Twilight Princess' guide, you'll have to go left when we say right, and east when we say west (and the other way around). As long as you're aware of this, you should have no trouble using the guide.

LB's 'The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess' Walkthrough and Strategy Guide

A creepier version of'Resident Evil 4'
I would easily place Resident Evil 4 on my list of top ten video games. It was beautiful, creepy, challenging and a hell of a lot of fun. I will forever have etched in my brain the experience of innocently entering the game's 19th century Spanish village, then suddenly being cornered by 19th century zombies with 21st century chainsaws. A lot of swearing and nervous laughter followed.

For this reason I am conflicted regarding this video of the "Hooked Man Version" of RE4. According to HardestBoss this version was ditched because it was "too paranormal" for the Resident Evil plot. However, it was also this version that made Capcom's Shinji Mikami warn gamers, "Don't pee your pants".

I say I'm conflicted because, of course, I want more RE4. However, it was perfect as is, and, for some reason, baby dolls with ankle-slashing knives just doesn't seem to fit. Still, it's fun to watch:

Oh, and if you haven't played RE4 yet, get on it! Here's the LB RE4 Walkthrough and Strategy Guide

I wanna rock!

Harmonix, creators of the popularGuitar Herogames, have announced their next foray into the music world withRock Band, a four player game to be published by EA and due out by the end of this year.

The four-piece band will consist of a lead guitar, a bass guitar, a microphone, and a drum set. You can invision the drooling happening at EA over the profits from the peripherals alone.

Anyway, the game will support online multiplayer, meaning that I can finally get that high school band going, with my friends from high school, who are now scattered throughout the country.

Make sure to use the multiplayer on your favorite comfort rug as you will be there for hours no doubt..Also of interest is unprecedented access to the master recordings from some of the biggest music companies. Seems like they are finally waking up to the notion that the music business has changed.

Rock on, Wayne!

Xbox Live Instant Messaging

Microsoft has announced that starting on May 7th, Xbox Live users will be able to text message with the over 260 million Windows Live users on PCs or mobile devices. This marriage of all things Microsoft messaging has been a long time in coming and has been at the core of the Xbox Live business plan.

To help you text, this summer Microsoft will unveil a keyboard attachment for the Xbox 360 controller, as you can see above. It's actually a pretty slick add-on and I applaud the design.

What I don't understand, though, is the desire to text people while playing a game or watching a movie. What's the point? If I'm watching a movie, I don't want to be disturbed.

There are many more enhancements coming with this May 7th update, and you can read the entire listat Xbox.com.

'Boom Boom Rocket' rocks!

I downloaded the demo ofBoom Boom Rocket, a new Xbox Live Arcade game made by EA, and while I'm not a big fan of EA games, I do have to say that they got this one right.

EssentiallyDance Dance Revolution, with buttons instead of a dance pad, the game challenges you to set off fireworks to the beat of music as you slowly fly through a city. The visuals are amazing, but are hard to take in because you're concentrating so hard on the buttons.

This is the perfect party game, easy to pick up and understand, fun for others to watch, and quick enough that everybody gets a turn.

I suggest downloading the demo for some free and fun gameplay.

'Monster Madness' and 'Shrek the Third' demos

If you're without a Wii, but are still pining for some new games then why not check out two quirky and funny game demos from Xbox Live:Monster Madness: Battle for SuburbiaandShrek the Third. Both are free and together offer you a few hours of decent gameplay.

Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbiais a top-down multiplayer cooperative shooter in the vein of such hits asSmash TV. Based in a setting of typical modern-day suburban America,Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbiapresents an offbeat riff on pop-culture horror with a vast collection of humorous looking mythical and paranormal creatures.

I gave it about 15 minutes and the top-down aspect of it really gave me some problems. Nevertheless, this is a nice change of pace from your normal first person shooter and definitely ranks high on the sarcasm meter. The cartoony characters and highschool stereotypes will make this a popular game.

Up next,Shrek the Third

LB 'Medal of Honor: Vanguard' Review
LB Review: 5

Platforms: PS2, Wii

EA's latest entry in its classic WWII shooter series is the same glitchy and graphically unimpressive 'Medal of Honor' you played four years ago, without the online capability. Sure, it has its fun moments. Sure, it has its challenging battles. And, sure, it is being sold as the stripped down version of the soon-to-be-released 'Medal of Honor: Airborne' for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. But, with all of that being said, there's little excuse in 2007 for such a piss poor (and short) production from a powerhouse developer and publisher, even if that developer and publisher is EA.

'Zelda: Twilight Princess'walkthrough success

Just a little note to say 'thanks' to everyone making use of our Zelda: Twilight Princess walkthrough.

It has become our most heavily trafficed walkthrough, and is on the way to defeating our current best seller, the LB LEGO Star Wars II Walkthrough and Strategy Guide.

While our Zelda: Twilight Princess guide will work for both Nintendo Wii and Gamecube versions of the game, it is our suspicion that many are waiting to get their hands on a Wii before playing it (and rightly so). With that being said, we know that our walkthrough will only continue to grow in popularity. So, thanks.

And, remember, if you need any help fighting your way through Hyrule, check out our walkthrough, as we've already helped thousands of people get through the game.

Donate to Comic Relief, get a'LEGO Star Wars 2'cheat AND free walkthrough

Let us know if you'd like the text-only (printer-friendly) or screenshot version of the guide, and we'll send it off ASAP.

Please note, this offer is only good through today, Friday, March 16th, 2007.
